Leh Manali Highway is one of the most attractive destinations for the youth. It lies in northern India connecting Leh and Laddakh along with Manali in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The length of the highway stretches up to 428 km approximately. Apart from being a route connecting various destinations, it is also considered as a trunk route for India – China Border roads which is maintained by the authority of the Border Roads Organization (BRO) of the Indian Army. It is the second land approaching Laddakh whose construction began in 1964 with two lanes wide where one lane faces a particular direction with no road divider.

The highway’s north end in Leh, Laddakh to the south end in Manali, Himachal Pradesh constitutes an average elevation of more than 4000m and the highest elevation of 5328m at the Taglang La mountain pass. The view of the highway is sightful as both sides of the highway feature beautiful mountain ranges. The view of the highway changes on passing by the Atal tunnel from where greenery starts receding upon entering the Chandra river valley. Moving further and after crossing Darcha, the greenery ends completely with the view of alluring mountain ranges.

The peaks of these mountain ranges are usually covered with snow throughout the year which makes the highway slippery and slushy to travel. It has many damaged stretches which lack maintenance which would be a reason for dangerous landslides. Travelers are often advised to drive carefully in such areas.

The climate is a cold semi-arid desert with warm days and cold nights. People wear light woolens clothes during the daytime and heavy woolens at night. Rain is experienced during the monsoon season in July and September.

Peak Season

Leh-Manali highway is one of the most desirable and captivating destinations that have peak season travel during May-June and September-October. This is also a reason for a large number of hotels and PWD rest houses that have been established in the highway region. Many Dhabas provide food as well as inexpensive dormitory bed. With the increase in the number of tourists year by year, Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) and Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) have initiated the operation of buses that travel the entire highway in two days.

Bikers and Leh-Manali Highway

This Highway has become the most demanding tourist destination for the bikers who complete their journey altogether with a certain group of bikers. One of the major complications faced by the tourist traveling by their vehicles such as cars or bikes is the shortage of fuel as there is no fuel station between Tandi and Karu which is about 330 kilometers. 

Therefore it is advisable to carry extra fuel in separate containers or tanks. Another common problem faced by tourists is alt phobia or altitude sickness whose symptoms include headache, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. In this situation, it is advisable that the traveler should not spend much time at high altitudes and should intake glucose, chocolates, or any other high-energy food.

The route of Leh-Manali covers certain cities such as Manali, sissu, Tandi, Keylong, Jispar, Darcha, sarchu, pang, Leh, etc. Thus this sightful experience of mountain ranges and greenery cannot be forgotten by the tourists easily and that’s why this highway not only attracts tourists of the nation but the tourist of all over the world.
