Do you know about Spirit of St Louis

Spirit of St Louis

You all would like to hear a story of an iconic airplane that made flying possible overseas I’m sure.  Moreover, Spirit of St Louis is an amazing airplane, it’s built for only one purpose that changed history forever. We are going to talk less about the plane and more about the person who flew it around. The story of people who made history is worth reading despite learning about airplanes and their machinery, trust me!

Spirit of St Louis is a solo airplane which flew from New York City to Paris, France. The flight has fully loaded with fuel since it needed 10 gallons of gasoline per hour to fly around.

About the Spirit of St Louis

Spirit of St Louis is a solo airplane that flew from New York City to Paris, France. The flight has fully loaded with fuel since it needed 10 gallons of gasoline per hour to fly around. You can’t see anything out of the airplane since the pilot is seated behind 400 gallons of fuel, quite scary, isn’t it!

The flight had to balance the weight of 400 gallons of gasoline so it was kept at the balance point. The pilot seated way back on the plane, he couldn’t see through anything out of the plane. Spirit of St Louis, the first-ever airplane to fly over the Atlantic, it became the pioneer of Aviation.

How Lindbergh flew the Spirit of St Louis?

Charles Lindbergh lived his life normally as chief pilot in the mail route flying mail between St Louis and Chicago in the 1920s. Lindbergh had to make a brave decision that would change his life forever. He heard that “Anyone who flew nonstop from New York to Paris, France has given $25,000!” He didn’t care about the fact that six men already died trying and yeah, it was almost impossible then.

He seized a bank loan and economized on his personal savings to make a purchase of an airplane, then named it “Spirit of St Louis” He suggested some design considerations to the airplane exclusively for air travel. He made sure there had enough fuel to travel across the Atlantic.

Spirit of St Louis took off on may the 20th in the year 1927 around 8 in the morning. The airplane had about 400 gallons of gasoline flown for 33 hours before it could reach its destination. Lindbergh has done his remarkable flight travel and it hasn’t been all easy you see he had to overcome storms, ice, and fog.

The popular flight journey attained an end on may the 21st around 10pm, it was pure instinct. He couldn’t see through the airplane, remember what I told you before. The famous pilot had to depend on his peripheral vision “focus on the out of focus” to guide him through landing.

He landed at Le Bourget airport in Paris, France, more than 150,000  people carried him over their heads. He accomplished what no other pilot had done before, as astonishing as it sounds!

Lindbergh Return

Charles Lindbergh returned to the US where he received a red carpet treatment with a huge parade in New York City. They arranged for official banquets and ceremonies to honor the achievement, quite a celebration!. firstly, Lindbergh became the advocate of Aviation, proving that air travel across the Atlantic was possible. It paved the way for many more flights to fly over the Atlantic more frequently.

The life story of famous Charles Lindbergh was produced as a movie and what not! He got many awards and honors throughout his life.  Spirit of St Louis is on permanent display in the Smithsonian national air and space museum alongside many aircraft including the incredible Bell X1 aircraft.
