The drowning city of Venice

Venice is the capital of the Veneto region located in the northeast of Italy. Venice is a city that doesn’t have roads. The only mode of transport is waterways. It is also one of the most attractive tourist attractions in Europe. The region is made up of 118 small islands connected by more than 400 bridges over different channels. Venice city was derived from the ancient Veneti people. Veneti people are inhabitants of this region since the 10th century. The city of Venice was the capital of the Republic of Venice from 697 to 1797. In Middle Ages, Venice emerges as one of the major financial and maritime power. The Venetian Lagoon and part of the city are a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The city is known for its architecture and is considered one of the most beautiful man-made cities in the world. Venice is a city which shows a good example of transport infrastructure. For the first time railroad was made a path to the mainland in the 19th Century. In the 20th century, one more railroad is made adjoining the Ponte della Liberta causeway and the terminal paring facilities in Tranchetto island and Piazzale Roma. Apart from these railways in Venice, all transport work is done by water or on foot.

The Gondola  

Classic Venetian boats are used in functions like weddings, funerals, and tourists. The Grand Canal is crossed on Gondolas. In Venice, there are 400 licensed boats. They have distinct costumes. In front of the Gondola, a large piece of metal is there which is called fero. The shapes of the gondola are the same for many years. In the top, it looks like a Doaags hat. Gradually the changes were done. Now Gondola is consists of six bars pointing forward showing the sestieri of the city and at the backside, it is showing the Giudecca. There is a smaller boat also known as Sandolo.

Motorized Waterbus is the main means of public transport. It joins the Grand Canal and the city islands. Most commonly Gondole is used for public transport. Foot passenger ferries are used where there is no convenient bridge.

The mainland

There are five boroughs on the mainland of Venice. They are Mertre-Carpenedo, Margher, Chirignago- Zelarino and Favaro Veneto. The Mestre is the most populous urban area. The Venice People Mover is a public transport that connects the island of Transchetto. It is a car parking facility at Piazzale Roma where visitors park their vehicles. Piazzale Roma is Venice’s main bus station. It is connected to the Tramway lines and several bus routes. The mainland is connected via a road bridge Ponte della Liberta with groups of islands.

The public transit in Venice is very fast. The number of people commuting for public transit in Venice on average is 52mins.12.2 % of rider rides for more than 2 hours every day.  The people have to wait on average only for 10 mins a day at the stops.
