Everything you need to know about the Infrastructure of Water Supply in India:

Water infrastructure is a system that deals with the water supply, treatment, storage, water resource management, flood prevention as well as water-based transport systems like canals. Hydraulic infrastructures are rigid infrastructures and if you want to know more about rigid infrastructures, please refer to my blog on rigid infrastructures. Infrastructure Components

The groundwater is available on our lands and is pumped from its source through one or more wells. Surface water can be used via an intake pipe in a river, canal, large lake, dams, or artificial reservoir. In other cases, to ensure a consistent water supply the large dams have been constructed.

In some areas where water is not adequate, it is diverted from its place of origin to the place of origin and diverted to the basin where it has to be used which has to travel from many hills and mountains.

Irrespective of this entire water source, water transport equipment like pipe and pumps, high capacity pumps are used by the Municipal water supply systems.

The Infrastructure of Water Supply in India

Water-Supply Infrastructure:

For the supply of drinkable water, the raw water was treated. In the USA the US Environmental Protection Agency has designed a treatment plant to meet the desired need of water consumption and water quality. With regard to water supply, it could be subterranean or above-ground tanks. Water storage is done to provide sufficient time for disinfection and to deliver water when the customer’s need is greatest.

The last element is the distribution system in which water has to be distributed to the entire community. The water is gradually stored in the treated water reservoirs unless it was demanded by the residence, industries, or municipality.

Maintenance of Water Infrastructure:

Water infrastructure is as old as 100 years. The material used in these piping systems is of the best quality which has even exceeded their lifespan. In olden times the asbestos-cement and wooden storage tanks are used which need constant maintenance and are very expensive. Municipalities began to replace these pipes because their maintenance was more expensive. Water infrastructure direct cost was kept on increasing like maintaining dams, improving treatment plants, replacing pipes, as well as the indirect cost, which is also increasing like the expense of electricity to pump the water or bringing new equipment.

To know more about Water infrastructure refer to this amazing blog: How can you help protect source water.

The maintenance of water infrastructure is a big challenge like making dams, bringing water from the far, taking it to the treatment plant and from there supplying water to all the houses for drinking and domestic uses, to industries, for agriculture. Thank you bye-bye!
