What you need to know about the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project

Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project

One of the most massive Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project is proposed to be established at Madban village of Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, India.

One of the most massive nuclear power projects is proposed to be established at Madban village of Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, India. It is considered if the undertaking is built it would be the largest nuclear power generating station in the world with a net capacity of 9900 MW.

Nuclear Power The corporation of India (NPCIL) directed this massive nuclear power project. It is speculated that the construction is started in 2018 will be finished off by 2023. Nuclear Power Corporation of India is the owner as well as the operator of the project whose construction cost is approximately Rupees 1.12 trillion (US$15 billion).

This gigantic project is placed at the west coast of India which is spread over 968 hectares. The elevation of the nuclear power plant equals an average elevation of 90 feet (27 meters). Jaipur is on the Arabian Sea coast in Ratnagiri district and was one of the most significant ports in the ancient and medieval periods.

On 6 December 2010, an agreement was signed by the French president Nicolas Sarkozy and India’s prime minister Manmohan Singh for the construction of two-thirds generation of European Pressurized Reactors and the perpetual supply of nuclear fuel for 25 years.

The third-generation pressurized water reactors were the European pressurized reactors of 1650 Mega Watt, that were developed by Framatome, France

Areva S.A., a French state-regulated nuclear engineering firm and Nuclear Power Corporation of India ( NPCIL) signed a treaty costing Rupees $9.3 billion.

This project will strengthen the relationship between India and France and would also generate job opportunities for a large number of people.

It is presumed that will provide electricity to 7 crore households will lower the cost to Rupees 4 per kilowatt-hour.

Grawbacks in the production of nuclear power plants

There were numerous hurdles in the establishment of the nuclear power project. Some are stated as :
  1. According to The Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill 2010, in case of a nuclear accident, only the operator can sue the manufacturer or supplier manufacturer and the victims would not be able to sue anyone.
  1.  The anti-nuclear activists of India criticized the formation of nuclear power plants as it is a great threat to the lives of the people.
  1. Jaitapur being a sensitive area is prone to earthquakes which the people presume to be quite dangerous.
  1. The treatment for the disposal of nuclear waste will be either recycled or removed is yet not apparent.
  1. Many protests took place by the locals of the region against the nuclear power project.

However, the Supporter of the project considers it to be safe, environment friendly, and economically feasible.  The nuclear project generated about 755 billion units of electricity. The present nuclear power capacity of 6780 MW is expected to increase to 22480 MW by 2031.
