It was built in 1993, owned by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It was named by Congress when they built 19 stadiums and named it with Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru stadium. They named this ground Jawaharlal Nehru stadium. Earlier it was called a corporation stadium in the 1980s.

Football in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Chennai:
Chennai is famous for its huge festivity in the corporation stadium when the football association president of TamilNadu CR Vishwanath brings the Nehru International cup tournament to Chennai. After a renovation in 1993, it turned out to be a football stadium conducting league matches and athletic matches were made up here. It has hosted SAF football games.
In 2018 they went on a quest for maintaining poor conditioning of the ground, the green lush turned to brown when Chennaiyin football club spent 1.54cr on this ground for a season. The Sports Development Authority of Tamilnadu (SDAT) explained it’s due to very hot weather conditions. But it’s all due to their carelessness, which created a setback for them not to host the International match in the first half of the season because of the impoverished condition of the ground. Later clearing the issues in the field they went to play home team matches here.
