Introduction 

Cochin International Airport became the world's first fully solar-powered airport with the inauguration of a dedicated solar plant.

Cochin is the major port city of the Malabar Coast. Cochin is also known as Kochi is highly populated in Kerala, a spice trading center and it is considered to be the most popular metropolitan area in Kerala. Now talking about the Cochin International Airport is situated at Nedumbassery, Kochi, Kerala, India.

Making of Eco-Friendly Airport(Cochin International Airport)

The proposal estimated a cost of 1 billion, but the approval for the construction was given in May 1993. This project was developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model in India. This project was funded by 10,000 non-resident Indians from 32 countries. It is further expanded into different phase’s i.e. 

Phase 1

The airport was to handle just 100 passengers at a time, as the traffic of the passengers was growing so it made them necessary to redevelop the terminal.

Phase 2

This was designed exclusively for domestic operations 

Phase 3

Phase 3 was designed to accommodate 5 million passengers.

Phase 4

The new phase was designed similar to Kerala temple architecture and will have the latest features of Industry standards. 

Terminals – Cochin International Airport

Cochin has 3 important terminals 

Terminal 1 

The terminal underwent a huge renovation which started handling a capacity of 4000 passengers’ i.e. 

The terminal is equipped with:

  • 56 check-in counters
  • 6 reserve lounges
  • art area, 
  • a food court
  • executive lounge
  • Terminal 2 
  • Terminal 3

Terminal 2

The terminal is designed to handle 400 passengers at peak times 

It is equipped with:

  • 6 premium check-in counters, 
  • 4 self-check-in counters. 
  • 6 security gates 
  • A luxury area that can accommodate

Terminal 3 

The terminal is inspired by the traditional architecture of Kerala.

It is equipped with:

The Infrastructure is designed in a way where it has 

  • Air traffic control
  • Airport surveillance radar
  • Runway
  • Naval Air Enclave
  • Indian Coast Guard Air Enclave

Airport Security

Cochin International airport is listed among the 12 major cities. Its safety and security are handled by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (CISF). Security was handled by CISF.

Incidents that occurred at Cochin International Airport

On 30 TH JULY Flight 503, Dornier 228 crashed into a building and killed six people on board and 3 people in the building.

On 25TH April 2010, Emirates Flight EK 530 dropped due to heavy turbulence.

On 29 August it is Gulf Air Flight GF 270, an Airbus A320 from Bahrain, carrying 137 passengers skidded off the runway at 3.55 am during its descent. The reason for the crash would be heavy rainfall and the wings of the flight broke and people started jumping out of the exit doors.

Airport – Solar Power 

The solar power project is capable of generating 50,000 units of electricity daily. It is being supervised frequently and the project component includes PV modules of 265W. The Plant was installed by Emvee Photovoltaic Power Pvt Ltd. Hence the Cochin airport is considered to be the best Airports.
