Major North American defense contractors, including Boeing, MBDA, Lockheed Martin Aerospace Electronic Systems, and Raytheon, have long been reported on the potential merger of BAE Systems.

Given the sophistication and secrecy of many of these companies, John Hamley, CEO of the Center for Strategic and International Studies and former undersecretary of defense, described Tenix Defense’s acquisition of Lockheed Martin Aerospace Electronic Systems as a “presupposition”.

Recognizing the lack of scale in the business compared to MBDA, executives at BAE Systems quickly identified General Dynamics’ main rival, U.S. defense firm United Defense Industries (UDI), as a key acquisition target.
