The Construction and story of the Alaska Highway:
Alaska highway is one of the most mesmerizing expressways that connect the United States to Alaska across Canada. It is also known as the Alaskan Highway, Alaska-Canadian highway, or ALCAN highway. It was built during World War ll by U.S. Army engineers as a measure for the emergency supply of weapons.
The length of the highway is approximately 2232 km. It links numerous highways of Canada such as British Columbia, Dawson Creek, Delta Junction, and Yukon. It is considered a part of the Pan-American Highway which extends to Argentina.
The roads of the highway are properly paved except for a few gravel breaks, rough patches, and chuckholes. Various authorities work for the proper functioning and maintenance of the highway. You can also refer to my blog on Leh Manali highway.
The proposal for the Alaska highway was made in the 1920s by Thomas MacDonald who wished of making a highway from the United States to Canada. The official onset of the construction took place on March 9, 1942, when the equipment of the construction was transported through Northern Alberta Railways to British Columbia, Canada at Dawson Creek.
The passengers witness jaw-dropping scenery while traveling on the highway. The route was opened to the public after the war in 1948 which terminated all military purposes. It is considered to be the most difficult construction project ever since the Panama canal.
The portion of the Alaska Highway in Alaska is specified as Alaska Route 2. In Yukon, it is specified as Highway 1 and in British Columbia, it is specified as Highway 97.
Dawson Creek is the starting point of the Alaska Highway which is known as Mile 0. Outside Dawson, there is a bridge known as the kiskatinaw bridge standing at 100 feet above the stream below it.
