Foods to Avoid If You Have Anxiety or Depression

Some food items that trigger off Anxiety or Depression

Anxiety or Depression may be triggered by certain foods we put in our bodies. Avoiding these specific foods can relieve a person of anxiety. Some of these foods are:

Sugar

Many health conditions have a direct link to a higher amount of sugar intake. When we eat food containing a higher amount of sugar, our blood sugar level increases, and this sugar is used as a source of energy in our body. But when the sugar level in our bloodstream goes down, we feel the lethargic and low mood and crave more sugar. The boost and drop in blood sugar level can trigger the release of hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol into the bloodstream, causing Anxiety or Depression and panic attacks.

Fried foods

Fried foods or junk foods such as pizza, fried chicken, burgers, fries, etc are less nutritious and difficult to digest. These food items cause many stomach-related issues such as gastric, acid reflux, stomach ache, and other stomach-related issue and results in Anxiety or Depression.

Excess salt – Containing food

Some processed foods have an excessive amount of salt and when we eat such kinds of foods our blood pressure increases and hence increasing the workload of our hearts. The body then secretes a hormone known as adrenaline into the bloodstream leading to Anxiety or Depression.

Caffeine

Many beverages we take such as coffee, tea, energy drinks, chocolate, painkillers, etc contain caffeine. A small amount of caffeine can be tolerated by many people but large amounts can trigger Anxiety or Depression because caffeine stimulates the central nervous system. Excessive caffeine intake can cause heart palpitations, shaking, irritability, and insomnia.

Alcohol

Many people think that consuming alcohol will relax their body and mind and in many cases, it happens but when the effects of alcohol wear off one feels more worried and anxious and tries to drink in larger quantities leading to more Anxiety or Depression. Drinking in moderation has less effect on many people.
